Sjona Hanise

Hi my name is Sjona Hanise. I am 39 years old and graduated cum laude from Nelson Mandela University in 2020.

My approach to counselling is both person-centered and solution-focused. I believe that we all experience events differently and have varying levels of resilience. As such, as a counsellor I focus on how each individual has experienced the event that has brought them to counselling and how to help them find their way forward. While there is much to be learned from looking back at the events which have shaped us, I believe that the way to healing necessitates a focus on moving forward. The following are the psychological techniques and approaches I subscribe to most:

  • CBT approach
  • SFBT approach
  • Psychoanalytical approach

I chose this profession because I grew up in a community that was largely opposed to psychological intervention and/or could not afford to access it. I believe that every person deserves to prioritise their mental well-being and live the most well-rounded and emotionally satisfying life they can. This is why I focus on holistic healing in my counselling methods. I am passionate about providing psychological services that reach as many people as are willing to accept them. I believe that, more often than not, we suffer in silence with our anxieties and ailments and if there is a way for me to help even one person live a more authentic and joyful life, I will have fulfilled my objective as a counsellor.

Shevonia Daniels

“The way I see it, if you want the rainbow, you’ve got to put up with the rain.” – Dolly Parton

Hi, I am Shevonia Daniels born and raised in the Northern Areas of Port Elizabeth.

I attended primary school at Soutpan Primary and later went to Arcadia Senior Secondary school where I was head girl in grade 12. I have always been passionate about assisting at a communal level which is why I decided on this degree.

I studied at Nelson Mandela University starting out with a Bachelor of Arts degree and ending up doing a Bachelor of Psychology degree. To become a registered counsellor I had to do an internship where I was placed at Campus Health services better known as the student clinic and there I was able to acquire skills and knowledge that helped to shape my career. This became the foundation of my focus area which is Health counselling. Pregnancy, HIV, TB related counselling is my specialty as well as Covid related counselling and screening and general counselling. I make use of an Integrative approach that strongly contains cognitive behavioural techniques. However, a mixed method of modalities is used as situations vary and a person-centered approach is also included. The most important thing is to know which method would assist the client best.

Nitin Prag

Live your best life.

Hi. My name is Nitin Prag. I am a Registered Counsellor who graduated from Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University in 2015, after completing my BPsych (Couns) course. The course included a six-month practicum, which allowed me to put into practice what I had learned in my previous 3 and a half years of study.

While my practicum focused on offering mainly career assessment and counselling to a diverse student population, I was provided the opportunity to assist the University’s Campus Health clinic with HIV pre- and post-counselling, as well as testing, on a short-term basis.

I was able to further expand my skillset in the field of psychology when I was appointed as a Registered Counsellor between the two community psychology clinics at Nelson Mandela University. It was between these clinics where I became exposed to a wider variety and range of cases, as the clinics were geared towards serving the nearby, often vulnerable communities. I quickly learned in these three years that I had a knack for easily connecting with people of different backgrounds and age groups.

While I typically work from a Person-Centred Approach, I have experience using Solutions-Focused, Cognitive Behavioural, and Positive Psychology approaches to counselling as well. I have also gained experience working with trauma and crisis interventions.

From a young age, my passion was always focused on other people – whether it was to entertain them or to build them up. Psychology provides me with the platform to use my vibrant personality, my connectivity, and my insightful nature to assist each client with their counselling goals. I particularly enjoy working with adults in an individual counselling setting. If I had to pick a favourite, it would be counselling processes that are focused on self-empowerment and self-esteem building.

I understand how challenging life can be – as I am living and experiencing it as well – and this allows me to better practice with high levels of empathy, understanding, and a non-judgmental attitude when working with my clients.

Kayla Eberhardt

We rise by lifting others.

I am Kayla Eberhardt. I am a registered counsellor who graduated from Nelson Mandela University in 2019 with a Bpsych Counselling Degree. The degree included a 6-month long practicum which I completed at Nelson Mandela University Student Counselling Career and Development Centre. This allowed me to work with a diverse population with various presenting problems which helped me to gain invaluable knowledge and skills in my profession. I have gained experience in Individual Counselling, Career Assessment as well as Psycho-educational workshops. During my internship, I developed an LGBTIAQ+ Support group which I facilitated. This practicum allowed me to further develop my skill set as a counsellor.

During my studies, I was elected vice-chairperson and then chairperson of the Nelson Mandela University Psychology Society which bridged the gap between students and lecturers. This was a platform that allowed students to voice their concerns and it was my responsibility to facilitate communication between all parties with empathy and compassion. We also developed academic programmes as well as outreach opportunities to serve communities that may not have had access to counselling services. I consider myself to be a people’s person, I have a great love and passion for helping people.

Modalities:

Mainly Person-Centered Cognitive Behavioural approach to counselling.

Me as a counsellor:

  • Empathic
  • Non-judgmental
  • Warm
  • Understanding
  • Casual

I firmly believe that mental health care should be easily accessible to all people regardless of their background.
