About Us

What is a registered counsellor?

According to the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA), the role of a Registered Counsellor is to make psychological services accessible to the diverse South African population and to provide psychological and preventative interventions that focus on support and promote the enhancement of wellbeing in the community contexts.

Put simply,

  • We are the first responders for psychological support and mental wellbeing.
  • We offer short-term, supportive counselling, psycho-education, and psychological assessments for people from all walks of life.
  • When you feel unsure of how to cope with what you’re facing, we work with you to formulate a clear plan for the way forward.

Registered Counsellor

Kayla Eberhardt

We rise by lifting others.

I am Kayla Eberhardt. I am a registered counsellor who graduated from Nelson Mandela University in 2019 with a Bpsych Counselling Degree. The degree included a 6-month long practicum which I completed at Nelson Mandela University Student Counselling Career and Development Centre. This allowed me to work with a diverse population with various presenting problems which helped me to gain invaluable knowledge and skills in my profession. I have gained experience in Individual Counselling, Career Assessment as well as Psycho-educational workshops. During my internship, I developed an LGBTIAQ+ Support group which I facilitated. This practicum allowed me to further develop my skill set as a counsellor.

During my studies, I was elected vice-chairperson and then chairperson of the Nelson Mandela University Psychology Society which bridged the gap between students and lecturers. This was a platform that allowed students to voice their concerns and it was my responsibility to facilitate communication between all parties with empathy and compassion. We also developed academic programmes as well as outreach opportunities to serve communities that may not have had access to counselling services. I consider myself to be a people’s person, I have a great love and passion for helping people.

Modalities:

Mainly Person-Centered Cognitive Behavioural approach to counselling.

Me as a counsellor:
  • Empathic
  • Non-judgmental
  • Warm
  • Understanding
  • Casual

I firmly believe that mental health care should be easily accessible to all people regardless of their background.

Registered Counsellor

Nitin Prag

Live your best life.

Hi. My name is Nitin Prag. I am a Registered Counsellor who graduated from Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University in 2015, after completing my BPsych (Couns) course. The course included a six-month practicum, which allowed me to put into practice what I had learned in my previous 3 and a half years of study.

While my practicum focused on offering mainly career assessment and counselling to a diverse student population, I was provided the opportunity to assist the University’s Campus Health clinic with HIV pre- and post-counselling, as well as testing, on a short-term basis.

I was able to further expand my skillset in the field of psychology when I was appointed as a Registered Counsellor between the two community psychology clinics at Nelson Mandela University. It was between these clinics where I became exposed to a wider variety and range of cases, as the clinics were geared towards serving the nearby, often vulnerable communities. I quickly learned in these three years that I had a knack for easily connecting with people of different backgrounds and age groups.

While I typically work from a Person-Centred Approach, I have experience using Solutions-Focused, Cognitive Behavioural, and Positive Psychology approaches to counselling as well. I have also gained experience working with trauma and crisis interventions.

From a young age, my passion was always focused on other people – whether it was to entertain them or to build them up. Psychology provides me with the platform to use my vibrant personality, my connectivity, and my insightful nature to assist each client with their counselling goals. I particularly enjoy working with adults in an individual counselling setting. If I had to pick a favourite, it would be counselling processes that are focused on self-empowerment and self-esteem building.

I understand how challenging life can be – as I am living and experiencing it as well – and this allows me to better practice with high levels of empathy, understanding, and a non-judgmental attitude when working with my clients.
