What are psychometric assessments?

A psychometric assessment is a scientific method designed to measure an individual’s abilities, strengths, and weaknesses in order to assess their personalities, behaviours, and skills. Within this scope, a registered counsellor provides career, scholastic, and school readiness assessments to explore career suitability, assist educators and parents to determine if a child is ready to enter a primary school or help children to navigate the challenges that they may be facing as a learner. A psychometric assessment contains various questions which have been formulated specifically for the purpose of uncovering individual traits and cognitive functioning under the guidance of a counsellor, in a supportive and caring environment.

Psychometric assessments fall into four main categories:
  • Aptitude – used to measure an individual’s cognitive abilities and intelligence
  • Personality – measure psychological factors such as an individual’s attitudes, values, beliefs, and behaviours in relation to others
  • Behaviour – form part of personality assessments to determine an individual’s decision making abilities, environmental factors that precipitate behaviour and reaction to consequences as well as learning abilities
  • Emotional intelligence – used to asses how aware an individual is of their emotions and those of the people around them. This assessment also measures their ability to use emotion-based information to inform thinking, judgement and behaviour.
The advantages of career assessments:

Individuals often struggle to choose a suitable career path and can greatly benefit from psychometric assessments to help them uncover who they are and find out which career would be most suited to their personalities and abilities. This takes the guesswork out of choosing a work environment that may lead to feelings of dissatisfaction or frustration. The insights that psychometric tests provide can also be beneficial to those who are wishing to pursue new career opportunities.

The benefits of school readiness assessments:

School readiness assessments provide parents and teachers with insights into a child’s social, emotional, and cognitive abilities to determine if they are ready to make a successful transition into the Grade 1/Foundation Phase. These assessments can help to uncover areas of difficulty that a child may be experiencing and determine if further evaluation is needed. It also offers peace of mind to parents in affirming that their child’s development is progressing adequately. School readiness assessments make the change to formal education less traumatic for children and parents to give them a strong foundation for their educational future.

Why scholastic assessments are important:

Scholastic assessments are aimed at school learners who may be struggling academically. These assessments are designed to examine a child’s skills and abilities to determine if they are experiencing learning difficulties or emotional stressors that may impair their ability to perform. Scholastic assessments are a great tool in helping parents and educators to learn more about a child’s strengths and weaknesses, in order to adapt their approach accordingly.
